Adrian's Memories
We moved to THE GAP on Epsom Downs in 1951 and then to the town in 1962
After living in a 3 bed semi for all 11 year of my life this was an amazing place to live in. It was an enormous hall surrounded by rooms on 3 sides. The hall was over 30' long by 22' wide, but also 26' HIGH to the centre of the skylight.
In those early years aero modelling was a passion and I built planes that would fly around in circles in the hall.
I learnt rock climbing on the brick edges of the fireplace.
My brother and I had our college Christmas parties in The Gap, there was plenty of room for 100 people.
We built our own high quality sound system - known as hi-fi today. A large sand filled corner baffle and a Wharfedale speaker system driven by a Mullard 5-10 amplifier and home made tape recorder. Sound really lived in the hall.
Bach's toccata and fugue in D could bring tears to your eyes.
It was at the start of FM broadcasting and Goon Shows and Ewan MacColl's radio ballards were all recorded - I still have the tapes.
In 1963 we moved to a detached house in the middle of Epsom town. 5 years later Dad retired and bought a house in Ferring near Worthing and sold the Epsom House which was later knocked down to make part of a one way road system
The house in nearly an acre of ground. I learnt to drive in the garden
It had a flat roof with easy access and a tower that I built model aeroplanes in
My brother repairing the lead on the tower roof
The main hall over 30 feet long and 28 feet high
The fireplace was the only heating. We all wore lots of clothes
The hall seen from above the fireplace. note the 'hi-fi' speaker at the rear left side
The TV was kept in the study. I never watched it
The master bedroom adjoining the base of the tower which was its ensuite bathroom

The house in Ashley Avenue we moved to in 1962 including a shot of it being demolished in the 70's to make way for a one way system in the centre of Epsom
The extension we builton the back for me to live in
Driving past in the mid 1970s. The trees were all in our garden Only the garage was left part way through demolition.
I think the laundery basket, right front in the left photo was the one I have a photo of me in as a baby.
You can see my toilet in the right hand picture
