Ron Lucking

Ron Lucking was a horologist and precision engineer. He spent most of his life repairing and making clocks and watches. He had many other interests including amateur radio and photography.

Many years ago when the telephone system went to STD and calls were charged on the time taken he designed a timer you could stand your phone on to easily measure the time of your call. Sadly he designed it to fit under the standard phone of the time that was just being replaced by a newer model. By the time his design was in production most people were changing their phones, so he hardly sold any.

Photo shows me with Ron and his wife Eve at a HMS Mercury radio rally near Portsmouth in the mid 80s.

With the advent of digital clocks and watches  he decided he needed another line of business so he designed a barograph driven by a new fangled electronic clock movement that would record air pressure in the conventional way on standard paper sheets that were readily available. He made it work with the usual wet ink pens and also the new felt tip type.

This was a much more successful project and production continued for around 10 years until, as he said, he could not face starting another batch. I think he made around 50 of them.

This is my one,  shown with the felt tip pen which has dried out after many years.
