Tower Pageant

In the 1990s London's first dark ride was built in an underground wine storage cellar close to the Tower of London. The visitors descended in lift with glass walls. As the lift went down you could see a cross section of London in including the Victorian Sewers.

When the lift stopped at the bottom, visitors were told they had arrived in the year 63 AD which was the year the Romans invaded the UK. Groups of 4 were seated in cars that ran around the museum gallery which was made up of many dioramas, each one depicted a stage in the development of London up to the present day.

From memory the displays of the plague, the great fire of London, the world wars stick in my mind.

We designed and made a special electronic display that showed the year that was mounted in each of the 18 cars. At the start it showed 63 and as the car moved to the next diorama the date scrolled up and stopped at the right date. Controlled by sensors mounted at each display. The clever programming was done by my friend David LeMaistre.

The ride was conceived by the Colverin Consortium but only lasted about 8 years. The ride was taken out and the museum was taken over by the Museum of London.
