Adrian's Memories
Mast Photography
I was given a pneumatic pump up mast for amateur radio use. I made a mount so it would fit on the tow ball of my Caravelle, designed so it could be set vertical even if the car was not level.
Around 1986 I decided it would be good to be able to take some photos from it.
I designed and built a remote control 'pan and tilt' head to mount the camera on.
Only problem was the viewfinder. I mounted a small CCTV camera alongside the Olympus OM2, and built a hand held display out of a video door phone. The camera had a motor wind on it so it was easy to take lots of photos.
My son Markus was deeply into VW beetles and built custom 'cal look' ones he took to beetle rallies. These rallies were normally held on old air fields so it was difficult to get good overall shots of the cars.
I took lots of 'high up' photos and several magazines used them on articles about the rallies.
Later when digital photography had really arrived some cameras were made with a 'live view' finder systems that allowed the camera to be fully conrtolled remotely from a laptop.
The first remote camera I had was a Canon Powershot G2, followed by a G9. I then moved on to a Nikob D5100 which is absouletly superb. finally I made a zoom motor drive for the 28 to 200 lens which has prooved very useful, and am now using it on a D5500. I also use a Sony RX100-4.
I also tried mounting the camera vertical, taking a series of shots and merging them together to make better aspect ratio on panorams.
With D5500 mounted. The blue rack band that controls the power zoom can be seen
The head can look straight up or down and rotate continuously

International Scout Camp 2017 Ardingly. The theme was Harry Potter and we built this replica of the Hogwarts Express, and yes we did get permission to use the name for a week
