Marshalswick, St Albans

I was born in Edmonton, London January 1939.

We moved to a new estate being built at Marshalswick, just outside St. Albans, a few months before WW2 started.  It was just a few miles from the DeHavilland factory which was one of the main targets for V1 doodlebugs.  I remember them flying overhead, their engines stopping and a few seconds later enormous explosions.

I also remember the winter of '47 and walking to school with snow drifts as high as houses on both sides of me.

Another memory is the howling banshee moans and screams of the wind blowing through the telephone wires. In those days telegraph poles carried arouind 200 wires and they all sang in the wind.
