Robin Wade and Pat Read

Robin Wade and Pat Read ran an exhibition design studio based on Eel Pie Island in the Thames near Kingston. I did several jobs for them including  displays for the Ironbridge Gorge Museum near Telford and the Derry museum in Northern Ireland.

Ironbridge Gorge Museum. This was a projected light display showing the water cycle in operation. The 5 projectors high up on the roof beams had mechanisms built in to project the light pattern shown in the next photo . The light parts are moving projections showing the water cycle movements. Worked superbly but the projectors were unrelaible and needed servicing often. (It ran 8 hours a day)

2 other jobs at Ironbridge. The left one has pollution entering  a river and the visitor must press the '999' button before it reaches the town. The other is a guessing game on how mucvh water is used in various household activities.

Londonderry, Northern Ireland, A cautionaty tale.

Robin designed a Visitor Centre and exhibition there and commissioned Derek Freeborn to make a display of a large (A3) book of several automatically turning pages. Derek made the cabinet to house it and asked me to make the mechanism. As you can see from the photos it was quite a complicated affair, but worked very well. When I had finished it they sent me the artwork to stick on the pages. I was horrified as the pictures all showed the English beating the Irish at several historic battles.

Anyway it was shipped off to Derry and installed without problem 2 days before the exhibition ws due to open. The next day I had a call saying the display had gone wrong and they were returning it as faulty.

When it arrived I was amazed as it had been completely smashed.

I told Robin what had happened and he refused to talk to me as his order had been with Derek Freeborn. I spoke to Derek and he said 'Repair it quickly and get it sent back for the opening or none of us will be paid. I worked on it a whole day and a night rebuilding it and got it back in time for the opening and all went well.

I was never paid for the extra work and I never did a job for Robin Wade again
