Nationa Physical Laboratory 1994

I was approached by John Chambers of thr NPL in 1994 to design and build a radio receiver to work in conjunction with the 60KHz time signals transmitted from Droitwich. The atomic clock at the NPL controlled the data sent to the transmitter. NPL needed a special receiver back in Teddington to receive these signals to check theit authenticity. The receiver also needed an inbuilt precision oscillator that was locked to the signal.

In the event of the transmission failing my oscillator continued , being monitored by the NPL computer so that when transmission resuned the computer had all the data.

I collaborated with Derek Atter who did most of the detailed design work.

It was very successful and 5 units were built and were running up to the time Droitwich was switched off. Now our only time signals come from Germany.

In 1996 I also built a special receiver for the 'Light program' on 198 kcys. This is so they could monitor the frequency that also carries phase modulated government information and they needed a receiver to check it.  The design was very successful and 2 units were built. Again Derek Atter contributed his technical expertise.
